My bachelor's thesis is an object responding to the space that surrounds it. It points out the contradiction between organic and austere form. In my work, I materialize abstract experiences through metonymically selected building elements related to the places in which I have these experiences. As an extraction of elements appearing in the architecture of the Southern Mediterranean, a form of ornament appears in the work, which is understood by a figurative comparison to the experience of travelling on holiday. Another element, representing a figurative experience of returning "to reality", are the lux spheres. Their character is linked to the architecture of Central Europe. I explore the relationship between the different types of buildings, which I then freely develop. My perception of reality enhances the recognition of the new with the already known. I let the objects represent and capture these two opposing perceptions with implications and emphasis on their differences. In this way, I come to find in my work a similarity between geometric austerity, which signifies perfectionism, and the intuitive unfolding of ornament, which inserts the theme of organicity into the object. An important aspect of the thesis is processuality. I understand my work as a border between conceptual and intuitive process.

Linguistic expression of sound in bird names motivated by their vocalization

This thesis aims to describe and clarify the way sound is expressed in language. This is achieved by analysis of bird names motivated by their vocalization. The thesis is conceived from the onomasiological point of view where the starting point of the analysis is the referent to be named. In the theoretical part of the thesis, onomasiology and Lakoff's Idealised Cognitive Model are described. Analysis of the bird names is carried out in within the particular ways in which sound is coded in language. The resulting data are quantified and interpreted.

The differences between perception of metonymy in photography and in movies from the perspective of reception aesthetics

The diploma work "The differences between perception of metonymy in photography and in movies from the perspective of reception aesthetics" deals with different uses of the figure of speech - metonymy - in visual communication. The metonymy is primarily used as an ornamental device of language expression. It is also distinguishable in purely visual information that is provided in photography and certain film shots. In visual communication, metonymy is also used for embellishing of the visual content or, at least, its correction. This work is focused especially on these examples of the use of metonymy that employ the method of reception aesthetics, which was up to now applied only to literary works. The subjects of interest of the reception aesthetics are so- called places of indeterminacy and the horizon of expectation which is also the focus of this work in addition to its main focus on metonymic expression in movies and photography. The first part of this work deals with the theory of the reception aesthetics and its main exponents. The second part deals with the relationship between the recipients and the media, specifically photography and movie. Conceptualization of Life in the Czech Popular Lyrics (Contribution to the Study of the Linguistic Picture of the World)

This thesis examines the conceptualization of life in the lyrics of Czech popular songs of 1960s. The thesis derives theoretically and methodologically from cognitively and culturally-based approaches to language, especially from the theory of conceptual metaphor and metonymy (e. g. Lakoff and Johnson) and the concept of language as a picture of the world (school of Lublin). At first the thesis analyses the semantics of lexeme life. The analysis is based on the data from dictionaries and it reaches the basics of the linguistic picture of life as it is anchored in common language. Simultaneously the thesis works with the picture of life (in contrast with death) how it is served in the literature about Czech folk culture. The main part of this study consists of almost a hundred interpretations of lyrics from the examined period, which depict human life in its various stages and forms (through oppositions of life - death, youth - old age, etc.). The analysis follows relevant semantic elements which participate on its conceptualization. Breathing and respiration as the source domain of conceptual metaphors in Czech

Bachelor thesis is focused on the semantic sphere of breathing and respiration. It is based on theories and methods of cognitive-cultural approach to language. The first chapter concerns the conceptual metaphor theory, metonymy cognitive concepts and the metaphor combined with metonymy (the metaphtonymy). The next chapter brings examined semantic sphere based on data from interpretation, etymological dictionaries etc. The attention is drawn in particular on metaphor and metonymy, to which the data refer. The third chapter deals with the physical experience of breathing in its entirety (sensory perception of breathing and experiencing of own respiration). There is also outlined, how this experience base is projected into the language. The crucial chapter of the thesis presents the classification of the collected material of language: it shows which target domains are related to source domain of breathing and respiration on the metaphorical expressions excerpted from phraseological dictionaries in the form of idioms. Research has shown that the breathing and respiration in the source domain are used primarily metonymically. Conceptualization of emotions in the Czech Sign Language (On the example of anger)

This thesis is focused on the conceptualisation of emotions in Czech Sign Language with the emphasis on the linguistic conceptualisation of anger. At the beginning the author reveals basic theoretical issues of the cognitive linguistics of spoken and sign linguistics. Afterwards she presents some general facts about metaphor and metonymy in spoken and sign languages - with the main focus on the metaphorical-metonymic conceptualisation of anger - and shows metaphors and metonymies of anger in the English, Polish and Czech language. The core of the thesis consists of the linguistic research of anger in Czech Sign Language. The author identifies basic metaphors and metonymies of the concept of ANGER in Czech Sign Language within the empirically gained linguistic material. The gained data from all four languages are compared and presented in a table at the end of this paper. The Cremator: The Fetish as The Denial of Life and The Adoration of Death

The Cremator: The Fetish as The Denial of Life and The Adoration of Death Summary The object of interest in the semiotic analysis of the literary work "The Cremator" by the Czech writer Ladislav Fuks are primarily the motifs of fetishism and the cult of death. This framework is examined in the relation to the specific "new" language of masochism and in the relation to the aphasic language disorder related to metonymy. The utterance of the main character Karl Kopfrkingel intermingles with the way he thinks and consequently acts, as he duplicates through his language a fictional world and obscures it with the fetishized descriptions adoring the death. In this case, the masochism is not manifested in a sexuality (as in the case with Masoch), but on the ethno-social level related to the personal myth crisis and the subsequent transformation of Kopfringel and the related environment of the fictional world. These aspects become to a murdering urges in the context of ethnic affiliation, which has become to an obstacle and the settlement with it demands the establishment of a new order. The Interaction of Metaphor and Metonymy in the English Names of Mushroom

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the occurrence of metaphor, metonymy and their interaction in the English names of mushrooms. The theoretical part focuses on both processes and it emphasises cognitive linguistics approach i.e. conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy and blending theory. The practical part aims to classify and quantify source domains and bases of semantic motivation i.e. the salient features that served as the inspiration for the name. The second section of the practical part examines the different patterns of metaphor and metonymy interaction. Each pattern is described in detail on various case studies.

Interpretation of advertising based on using metaphors

This thesis deals with metaphors in the conception of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. Metaphor is one of the fundamental principles anchored in our conceptual system and in our relationship to the world. Metaphors reveal how the world is saved in our language. This thesis illustrates a method of forming metaphors on the example of advertisements. It closely focuses on the cultural differences.
